Steven Dalt should have died in that cave on the planet Kwashi. After all, as the natives say, of a thousand people attacked by the cave-dwelling alaret, one will not die. But Dalt is that one. He survives, but not without personal cost he has picked up a passenger an alien intelligence transferred itself from the alaret to take up residence in his brain. Steven Dalt will never be alone again.
But Pard, as Dalt names the alien who shares his life, doesn’t believe in freeloading. He pays his rent by using cellular-level consciousness to maintain Dalt’s body in perfect health—no disease, no aging. And now Dalt appreciates the full meaning of the Kwashi natives’ saying Of a thousand struck down by an alaret, one will not die . . . ever.
Spanning twelve hundred years, HEALER follows Dalt and Pard through the centuries as they become known as The Healer, an enigmatic figure with the power to cure diseases of the mind. And when a wave of interstellar slaughter threatens the civilizations of the LaNague Federation, only The Healer has the resources to face the onrushing doom.

"HEALER is a well-plotted, well-paced, well-told novel. Solid, well-written, and strong, it is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve picked up in some time. HEALER should be of particular interest to the Heinleinian reader." (Future Retrospective)
"Highly enjoyable and meaningful. Healer brings us a refreshing new concept. This book is for people looking for new ideas and new points of view." (SF Booklog)

"The themes of symbiotic partnership and the problems of lone immortals in a world of mortals are not new to SF, but Wilson weaves the two together and comes up with a work that . . . is both unique and quite enjoyable. I was sad to come to the end of HEALER." (The SF&F Journal)

Healer The LaNague Federation Book 5 eBook F Paul Wilson
I wound up being disappointed in this book. The stories were okay and the ideas were interesting but the author never developed the character enough to identify with him in any way. The two conscious minds in one body seemed to make for a great background for lots of interesting internal dialog but it just never went there with any depth.I believe this may have been the author's first book and it appears that he's written several other books that are successful. I was hoping to use this book as a measure to determine if I wanted to pick up more books by him. Unfortunately, based solely on this book, I won't be.
The book was NOT a waste of time but would only recommend it it it's on sale.

Healer The LaNague Federation Book 5 eBook F Paul Wilson Reviews
Excellent book. I just discovered the 4 books in this series. I have long loved "Enemy of the State". This is another great book in that series.
I read this book when I was in college over 30 years ago; it was a shabby paper back when I borrowed it from a friend. I gave the book back; but it resonated with me and I've been looking for a copy ever since. I just down loaded it onto my , so I don't have to worry about it being misplaced, stolen, or borrowed. It is a book you can read over and over and still find some insight that beckons through the years.
I have read this story in book form three times, and now am going to read it again from my kindle. It is three short stories written as one story, each following on from the previous and the main character ages throughout the tale. I really enjoyed it, and if you like a bit of fiction and fantasy you will not be disappointed. It was one of the first books I bought for my .
In my library of about 1,000 paperbacks I have maybe a dozen that will always be my favorites to read again and again. This one is in the top 3. My favorites always follow one person or one family; you come to love them with their awesome abilities and never tire of read about them. My paperback copy is from the first Dell printing in June, 1977 and I have read it dozens of times.
First read this in paperback, decades ago. So glad to be able to re-read in electronic form.
First novel, yes. Author notes flaws, yes. Still ...
Great concepts (both the LaNague Federation and the Healer), execution is solidly good.
For me, I just love it.
Recommended.
An imaginative yarn of an ordinary man turned super hero by a slug-like creature that invades his brain. This very early Wilson and his Libertarian political philosophies and otherworld proclivities are showcased. His later works flow much better, but I really enjoyed this for its imagination and cleverness.
I've owned this book for a long time and read it many times over the years. I decided to read it again on my which led to this purchase. I really enjoy the 'universe' the story unfolds in as well as the premise of the main character(s). It's not a sophisticated book so it's easy reading while entertaining. It's space opera and fun.
